StudentCam is C-SPAN's annual national video documentary competition that encourages students to think critically about issues that affect our communities and our nation. This year students in grades 6-12 were asked to create a short (5-6 minute) video documentary on a topic related to the competition theme, "What's Your Vision in 2020? Explore the issue you most want presidential candidates to address during the campaign."
12th grade student Ella Grace Rodriguez from Winter Park High School in Florida won 2nd Prize in the High School East division for her documentary on political rhetoric in the presidential campaign, "Infected: Logical Fallacies in Political Discourse".
Entering university next year, Ella Grace plans to major in something connected to journalism and/or political science, partly due to her experience creating short documentaries for the StudentCam competition.
"I would like to thank those who have made this competition possible because it has really positively impacted my life. Not only has it changed my outlook on learning for the better, but also taught me to work collaboratively with others." - Ella Grace Rodriguez
Ella Grace has participated and won awards in each of the past three years of the StudentCam competition. Her documentaries from the 2018 and 2019 competitions can be viewed below:
- 2019 1st Prize Winning StudentCam Video - Comfortably Numb: Honoring America's Right to a Free Press (6:14)
- 2018 2nd Prize Winning StudentCam Video - A Precarious Balance: Religion in the Public Education System (7:44)
"Spectrum is committed to strengthening the communities where we live and work through educational programs like StudentCam,” said Adam Falk, Senior Vice President, State Government Affairs for Charter Communications, Inc. "We are proud of this partnership with C-SPAN that encourages students to think critically about the issues that affect our country and local community. Congratulations Ella Grace on the creativity demonstrated in your excellent work.”
